Giraffes Spotted With Zigzagging Necks Have Confused Experts

Wonky-Necked Giraffe Spotted In South Africa Is Somehow Still Alive

Giraffes spotted with zigzagging necks have confused experts

The young giraffe was first spotted last week near the Chobe National Park in the north-eastern part of South Africa.

The sex of the animal is unknown, but male giraffes are known to engage in aggressive fights over territory that can result in serious injuries to the neck.

However, vets have ruled out a fight as the cause of the young giraffe's strange injury and are baffled as to how the animal is still alive.

Dr. Johan Marais, of the University of Pretoria's Faculty of Veterinary Science, said: "It's a very strange injury and we're not sure how it happened.

"The giraffe is still young and its neck is still growing, so it's possible that the injury will heal itself over time.

"However, it's also possible that the injury will cause the giraffe to have problems with its balance and coordination, which could make it more vulnerable to predators."

The giraffe is being monitored by wildlife officials and will be given veterinary treatment if necessary.
