Rafael Nadal Powers Past Jack Draper in Australian Open
Nadal Survives Scare to Advance
Rafael Nadal overcame a stern test from rising star Jack Draper to reach the second round of the Australian Open on Monday. The 22-time Grand Slam champion dropped the first set but rallied to win 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in three hours and 41 minutes.
Draper Gives Nadal a Run for His Money
Draper, the world No. 40, pushed Nadal to the limit in the first two sets. The 21-year-old Briton broke Nadal's serve twice in the second set to level the match. However, Nadal's experience proved crucial as he regained control in the third and fourth sets.
"Jack played some amazing tennis," Nadal said after the match. "He was hitting the ball very clean and putting a lot of pressure on me. I'm very happy to have come through that one."
Nadal Extends Record at Australian Open
Nadal's victory improves his Australian Open record to 77-15. He is now just two wins away from becoming the first man to win 23 Grand Slam titles.
Next Up for Nadal
