Germany's General Election: Over 600 Million Eligible Voters
Upcoming Election on September 26
Center-Left Social Democratic Party Wins
On September 26, Germany will hold its general election, with over 604 million eligible voters casting their ballots. This represents a slight decrease of 13 million voters compared to previous elections.
The center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) emerged as the victor in the recent election, securing a narrow victory over the outgoing Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Angela Merkel. The SPD will now lead the formation of a new government coalition.
Germany's electoral system allows voters to cast two votes: a constituency vote for a local candidate and a party list vote for a political party. The result is a Bundestag, or parliament, consisting of 709 members of parliament (MPs).
